Christo was born Christo Vladimirov Javacheff on June 13, 1935 in Gabrovo, Bulgaria. After studying at Fine Arts Academy, Sofia, Bulgaria and Vienna Fine Arts Academy, he arrived in Paris, France in 1958, where he met Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon (June 13, 1935 – November 18, 2009). In 1964 they settled in New York, USA.
Christo and Jeanne-Claude are best known for their environmental art works including “Wrapped Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, 1969”, “Running Fence, Sonoma and Marin Counties, California, 1972-76”, “The Pont Neuf Wrapped, Paris, 1975-85”, “Wrapped Reichstag, Berlin, 1971-95”, “The Wall,13,000 Oil Barrels, Gasometer, Oberhausen, Germany,1998-99” and “The Gates, Central Park, New York City, 1979-2005”. Some projects including “The Mastaba, Project for United Arab Emirates” and “Over The River, Project for The Arkansas River, Colorado” are currently in progress.
