Tadao Ando was born in 1941 in Osaka, Japan. He taught architecture himself and established Tadao Ando Architect & Associates in 1969.
He served as a visiting professor at Yale University (1987), Columbia University (1988) and Harvard University (1990), and in 2003, became a professor at The University of Tokyo, where he was made an Emeritus Professor in 2003.
Among his major projects are “Row House, Sumiyoshi” (Osaka, Japan/1976), Rokko Housing I, II, III (Kobe, Japan/1983-99), “Church of the Light” (Osaka, Japan/1989), “FABRICA: Benetton Communication Research Center” (Treviso, Italy/2000), “Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts”(St. Louis, USA/2001), Chichu Art Museum (Kagawa, Japan/2004), Omotesando Hills (Tokyo, Japan/2006) and Punta della Dogana Contemporary Art Centre (Venice, Italy/2009).
Takao Ando has been awarded many prizes including the Annual Prize of Architectural Institute of Japan (1979), The 5th Alvar Aalto Medal (Finland, 1985), Gold Medal of Architecture, Academie d'Architecture (France, 1989), Japan Art Academy Prize (Japan, 1993), The Pritzker Architecture Prize (USA, 1995), Gold Medal of the American Institute of Architects (USA, 2002), Gold Medal of Union Internationale des Architectes (2005), The Kennedy Center International Committee on the Arts Gold Medal in the Arts (USA, 2010).
